Test Prep Strategies Part 3 of 3

Struggling to Engage Reluctant 3rd-5th Grade Math Students in Test Prep? Discover These Fun Strategies (with links)! Final Part in a 3 Part Series

|

As we conclude our three-part series, let’s put the finishing touches on our test prep journey. Parts one and two laid the groundwork, highlighting the importance of effective strategies for our 3rd-5th graders. But why stop at just ‘effective’ when we can make it downright enjoyable?! Join me as we explore the final chapter of our test prep saga, taking even our most reluctant students on the ride with us! Did you miss part 1 or part 2 check them out here!

Gamification of Learning: Showcasing Your Products

Knock Out Math Skills: Transform traditional practice into an exciting game of Knock Out. Students need dice, and player pieces (I often use mini erasers). Students will solve problems and try to knock their partner off their space! (Check out my Knock Out Math Skills Games here!)

Math Jeopardy: Bring the iconic game show into the classroom with Math Jeopardy. Divide students into teams and let them compete to answer math questions across various categories and point values. Need questions? Use task cards you already have to create categories. A teacher friend and I did this when I taught 3rd grade! Our students had so much fun! I just taped them to the board and they had to choose the category, and then I’d pull it off the board and project it onto my screen for all to see.

Mini Math Mysteries: Turn your classroom into a detective squad room, where students join Ellie the Detective Beagle, to solve multi-step word problems to review the evidence and match the clues to find the culprit! Complete with 3 engagement news report videos, and an evidence database to check answers! (Check out the mini mysteries here!)

Engaging even the most reluctant math students, these gamified activities inject fun into learning while reinforcing essential math skills. Whether it’s a simple game of Knock Out or a full-scale classroom transformation, these strategies captivate students’ attention and foster a love for the process of math.

Collaborative Learning: Supporting Peer Interaction

In our quest to make test prep engaging, let’s tap into the power of collaboration. Here are some products from my TpT store that can facilitate group study sessions or peer tutoring:

Math Task Cards: These versatile cards cover a range of math topics and can be used for group activities or as prompts for peer discussions. (Check out these task cards in my dollar deal!)

Partner Bingo Stations: Mix learning stations you’ve used throughout the year and set them up with a choice board bingo game. When students complete 5 stations in a row with their partner, or black out their board they get a fun prize (try free ones like sitting together the rest of the day!)

Learning stations and independent practice activities also provide opportunities for students to work together in small groups or pairs, further enhancing their understanding of math concepts while strengthening their teamwork skills. These Math Skill Mazes would be great for independent learning!

By promoting collaboration and peer interaction, these resources foster a sense of community in the classroom and encourage students to learn from each other.

Celebrating Progress: Rewarding Achievements

As we near the finish line of our test prep journey, let’s take a moment to celebrate the progress our students have made. Here are some examples of things you can focus on when you offer students accolades to recognize their achievements:

Stamina Goals: make a big deal about students who demonstrate focus and endurance during practice sessions! For stamina, I will keep a timer and just set it. The first time someone breaks stamina, that is the time I record. Then we try again to beat our time. (if you’re an office fan, think about the time they didn’t speak until Kevin ate a candy bar)

Improving Score Goals: Celebrate students who show improvement in their test scores leading up to the state test!

Perseverance Goals: Recognize students who display resilience and perseverance in overcoming challenges with a personalized note of encouragement or a small prize.

Good Attitude Goals: Applaud students who maintain a positive attitude and mindset throughout the test prep process with a shout-out during morning announcements or a round of applause from their peers.

Utilizing Strategies: Acknowledge students who effectively utilize strategies learned from our past two blog posts with a “Test Prep Superstar” certificate or a special treat.

Remember, celebrating progress not only boosts students’ morale but also reinforces the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving their goals.
